Communication: Associate Professor, Management & Corporate Communication
I joined the University of North Carolina family in 2004, as part of the UNC Kenan-Flagler Management Communication faculty–and I have been Tar Heel bred ever since. Business writing and public speaking evolved into startup support and venture-pitch coaching; cross-cultural communication blended with heightened awareness of issues of diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging. Working with MBA Career & Leadership, in cooperation with innovation across the campus and around the state, and just living through these crazy times have helped me better see and support the value of every individual and resonant voice. Lift Every Voice & Hark the sound!
Entrepreneurship: Acting Executive Director, Launch Chapel Hill
My startup journey began with the lemonade stands and lawn mowing, and really took two great turns: first, when I worked as a solutions consultant at Vanguard Cellular Systems (now part of AT&T Wireless)—back when cell phone companies were the hottest startups—and, second, when I was lucky enough to connect with the Launch Box (soon The Triangle Startup Factory) in the then-fledgling American Underground. Since then, I have been very fortunate to work–as an advisor, pitch coach and critic, vocal supporter and networker–with teams who have come through Launch Chapel Hill, and across the many-layered entrepreneurship ecosystem coming out of the B-School, Innovate Carolina and across the UNC campus, NC and the southeast. I can provide solid support at the ideation stage, with overall marketing and messaging plans, and in developing pitches of all kinds. Clarity First!
Cross-Cultural Acumen: Licensed Partner, Culture Active & Richard Lewis Communications
I think I’ve read nearly every book there is on cross-cultural communication and management. I have been over-joyed to work with our international-student populations for nearly 20 years, and I have led global immersion trips to almost as many countries. I have helped develop simulations and strategies, workshops and training, and consulted with companies from startups and mom-and-pop shops to Fortune 100 companies–both within and outside the US. I am a licensed partner for global and cross-cultural training with Richard Lewis Communications and CultureActive, and am certified in several other team-building and intercultural assessments (including CQ: Cultural Intelligence, the ICSI [the Intercultural Conflict Styles Inventory], GlobeSmart, and the IDI [Intercultural Development Inventory]).
Consulting: Looking forward to Working with You
I also consult with individuals and businesses (small to large) looking to streamline their messaging processes, improve in-house skills, facilitate collaboration and teamwork, engage and expand operations internationally, and enhance communications of all kinds: internally and externally, written, spoken, slide-driven, interpersonal, asynchronous, electronic, online, multimedia and more. I would be delighted to hear from you and work with you to design a program best suited to you, your team and your business.
Having trouble getting teams to work (locally or across cultures)? Have a big report due or presentation coming up? Nervous speaking in front of people? Wondering about the usage differences between a colon and semi-colon? Need a pitch coach, advice on slides or other marketing materials, someone with whom to bounce ideas around, or communication advice of any kind? Please reach out if I can help. Tim_Flood@unc.edu

I grew up in Silver Spring, Maryland and now live in Greensboro, North Carolina with my wife and sons. I’ve been across a large part of the US and around a good portion of the world–and I’m open to most any opportunity to collaborate. I am very aware of the many layers of my privilege, and I work every day to share, give back and pay forward. I received my
