Bill Friday–besides having one of the most joy-inspiring names–was the first (and longest serving) president of the University of North Carolina System (of what’s now 16 universities) and–as you can read here–was a total badass! My good friend Nick Didow used to include this quote at the end of each of his emails. I try to share this quote at least once with each of my classes. I wasn’t born in North Carolina but (as the old saying goes) I got here as quickly as I could! My kids are Tar Heel born and Tar Heel bred–and we owe our wonderful friends and neighbors a good lot for making this place so wonderful. Hark the Sound!
